Helmholtz argues that the principle of least action, in Hamilton’s form with a kinetic potential, governs every reversible process then known, including electrodynamics and the reversible parts of thermodynamics, so that it can serve as the general law of physics. The history paper reviews Leibniz, Maupertuis, Euler and Lagrange, including the dispute over the Leibniz letter.
For this project, this is the nineteenth-century statement that the action principle is universal across physics, the precedent for asking which premise makes an action scale universal. The kinetic potential is also the object Hertz’s second image builds on in the Introduction.
