The two families of 84 and the number of generations

Draft, 4 November 2026

Abstract

With three generations and Dirac neutrinos, the 96 states of the finite Hilbert space split as 84+1284+12 in two ways, without the top or without the neutrinos, the blocks whose removal keeps the spectral-action values 5/85/8 and 8/38/3. With three families, one root per state, no structure examined exchanges the two blocks: unitaries commuting with colour, automorphisms of 𝔢8\mathfrak e_8 preserving or inverting a family grading, and isometries of E8E_8 roots in 192 slot assignments. With four families an element of W(E8)W(E_8) does, transposing colour and family, and 128=44+84128=44+84 under Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9) with 44=32+1244=32+12, a numerical fit, since colour lies in no such Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9). We propose no mechanism for three.

1 Introduction

In the Connes-Chamseddine line the number of generations is an input (Chamseddine and Connes 2008, 2007), and Krajewski diagrams (Krajewski 1998) and the Jureit-Stephan classification (Jureit and Stephan 2005) admit any multiplicity. The proposals we located that derive three, the DFTUZ notes of 1999 and 2000 (Rivero 1999, 2000) and the exceptional-Jordan line (Dubois-Violette 2016; Boyle 2026), lie outside the spectral-triple axioms; whether they give three as a theorem was not checked. In the limit of noncommutative geometry we know of no argument beyond “more than one”. The postulates behind the SO(30)SO(30) of composite scalars (Rivero 2005) fix the number at three through three counting equations (Supplemental Material, part 36, Section 1), outside the spectral-triple axioms and unrelated to the Kaluza-Klein reading pursued here. The hints are scarce; this note records one.

Counting four states per Dirac fermion and colour, Supplemental Material, part 21 splits the 96 states of HFH_F, three generations with νR\nu_R (Chamseddine, Connes, and Marcolli 2007), in two ways, 96=84⏟F1+12⏟T=84⏟F2+12⏟N,96=\underbrace{84}_{F_1}+\underbrace{12}_{T}=\underbrace{84}_{F_2}+\underbrace{12}_{N},(1) with TT the top block, NN the neutrino block, F1=HF⊖TF_1=H_F\ominus T and F2=HF⊖NF_2=H_F\ominus N. The three-form C3C_3 of eleven-dimensional supergravity and its dual C6C_6 have (93)=(96)=84\binom93=\binom96=84 on-shell components, a real count, while 84 in HFH_F is a complex dimension.

Proposition 1. Among blocks of 12 states made of whole Dirac species, those whose removal keeps cos⁡2θNC=5/8\cos^2\theta_{\mathrm{NC}}=5/8 and the ratio 8/38/3 of the photon and gluon coefficients, in the quadratic spectral action of Supplemental Material, part 18, are exactly one up-type quark and the three neutrinos together.

Proof sketch. With the sums (∑T3Q,∑YQ;Q2,colour)(\sum T_3Q,\sum YQ;\,Q^2,\,\text{colour}) of Supplemental Material, part 21, an up-type quark (1,53;163,2)(1,\frac53;\frac{16}3,2) is proportional to the totals (6,10;32,12)(6,10;32,12) and a down-type quark is not. Three leptons with kk charged give cos⁡2θNC=(10−32k)/(16−2k)\cos^2\theta_{\mathrm{NC}}=(10-\frac32k)/(16-2k), which is 5/85/8 only for k=0k=0 (Supplemental Material, part 33). ◻

Supplemental Material, part 21 proposed relating one family to C3C_3 or the M2-brane and the other to C6C_6 or the M5-brane, with the exchange of TT and NN as the content of the duality on the Standard Model side. We collect what the eleven-dimensional line proves about this exchange (Supplemental Material, 11D files 03 to 05): in every structure examined, three families in single slots admit none, and four admit one.

2 The colour obstructions

Proposition 2. (a) Under colour SU(3)SU(3), F1≃10(3+3‾)+24(1)F_1\simeq10(3+\bar3)+24(1) and F2≃12(3+3‾)+12(1)F_2\simeq12(3+\bar3)+12(1), so no unitary of HFH_F commuting with colour maps F1F_1 onto F2F_2. (b) For every homomorphism SU(3)→SO(9)SU(3)\to SO(9), Λ3ℝ9⊗ℂ≃Λ6ℝ9⊗ℂ\Lambda^3\mathbb R^9\otimes\mathbb C\simeq\Lambda^6\mathbb R^9\otimes\mathbb C has the colour content of neither family. (c) For every homomorphism SU(3)→SU(9)SU(3)\to SU(9), Λ3ℂ9\Lambda^3\mathbb C^9 has the colour content of neither family; it contains only 11, 33 and 3‾\bar3 exactly when ℂ9\mathbb C^9 is 9(1)9(1), 3+6(1)3+6(1) or 3‾+6(1)\bar3+6(1), and it is then 84(1)84(1), 15(3)+6(3‾)+21(1)15(3)+6(\bar3)+21(1) or its conjugate.

Proof sketch. (b) A real nine-dimensional representation complexifies to 9(1)9(1), 3+3‾+3(1)3+\bar3+3(1) or 8+18+1, giving in Λ3\Lambda^3 only singlets, a 6‾\bar6, or the 2727 of Λ3(8)\Lambda^3(8). (c) A case analysis over irreducibles of dimensions 1, 3, 6 and 8 leaves the cases stated, none with equal nonzero numbers of 33 and 3‾\bar3 (Supplemental Material, 11D files 03 and 04). ◻

Since colour acts through the finite algebra, (a) excludes every automorphism of the finite spectral triple of the Standard Model. The scope of (b) and (c) is linear colour on the nine transverse directions of the little group and the 84 of the three-form (escapes in Section 6). The direction: a bijection of TT onto NN preserving the tensor factors, linear in each index, trades the colour index of the top for the generation index of the neutrinos (Supplemental Material, part 33, Proposition 4.2(b)).

3 The E8E_8 placement

E8E_8 is the wall group of Hořava-Witten theory (Hořava and Witten 1996). Over ℂ\mathbb C, an inner automorphism of order three with fixed algebra 𝔰𝔩(9)\mathfrak{sl}(9) grades 𝔢8=𝔰𝔩(9)⊕Λ3ℂ9⊕Λ6ℂ9(80+84+84),\mathfrak e_8=\mathfrak{sl}(9)\oplus\Lambda^3\mathbb C^9\oplus\Lambda^6\mathbb C^9\quad(80+84+84),(2) with b=0,1,2b=0,1,2 the gravity, C3C_3 and C6C_6 sectors. Under SO(9)SO(9), 248=36+44+84+84248=36+44+84+84. Reading b=1,2b=1,2 as M2 and M5 charge is a proposal.

Lemma 3. Let ℂ9=(3,1)−2+(1,6)1\mathbb C^9=(3,1)_{-2}+(1,6)_1 under SU(3)×SU(6)×U(1)SU(3)\times SU(6)\times U(1), with sfs_f the centre of this SU(3)SU(3), which defines the family grade aa. Then sfs_f commutes with the grading (2), its centralizer is (SU(3)×E6)/ℤ3(SU(3)\times E_6)/\mathbb Z_3, b≡a+2T3(mod⁡3)b\equiv a+2T_3\pmod3 for the Cartan T3T_3 of the SU(2)SU(2) in E6⊃SU(6)×SU(2)E_6\supset SU(6)\times SU(2), and the pieces 𝔤a,b\mathfrak g_{a,b} are b=0b=1b=2a=0442121a=1(3,6‾)−3(3,15)0(3,6‾)3a=2(3‾,6)3(3‾,6)−3(3‾,15¯)0\begin{array}{c|ccc} &b=0&b=1&b=2\\\hline a=0&44&21&21\\ a=1&(3,\bar6)_{-3}&(3,15)_0&(3,\bar6)_3\\ a=2&(\bar3,6)_3&(\bar3,6)_{-3}&(\bar3,\overline{15})_0 \end{array}(3)

This SU(2)SU(2), called SU(2)ISU(2)_I, commutes with the Georgi-Glashow SU(5)SU(5), with T3=tT_3=t on 5‾⊂16\bar5\subset16 and on the singlet NN, and T3=−tT_3=-t on 5‾⊂10\bar5\subset10 and on νc\nu^c, where t=±12t=\pm\frac12.

Theorem 4. For the generation 16⊂2716\subset27 at a=1a=1, in the left-handed basis, 10=(Q,uc,ec)10=(Q,u^c,e^c) and 5=(D,Hu)5=(D,H_u) lie in the C3C_3 sector 𝔤1,1\mathfrak g_{1,1}; (dc,L)(d^c,L) and NN lie in 𝔤1,1+2t\mathfrak g_{1,1+2t}, and (Dc,Hd)(D^c,H_d) and νc\nu^c in 𝔤1,1−2t\mathfrak g_{1,1-2t}; antiparticles lie in 𝔤2,−b\mathfrak g_{2,-b}. With conjugates, the top block has (C3,C6,gravity)=(6,6,0)(C_3,C_6,\text{gravity})=(6,6,0) and the neutrino block (3,3,6)(3,3,6), for both signs of tt, and the 96 states split as 45+45+645+45+6 for t=+12t=+\frac12 and 33+33+3033+33+30 for t=−12t=-\frac12.

The proofs are in Supplemental Material, part 33. As tct^c is an antitop field, the two chiralities of the top particle lie in different sectors. Selecting t=+12t=+\frac12, where νc\nu^c is the only state in the gravity sector, is a proposal.

Proposition 5. If the cubic couplings come from the structure constants of 𝔢8\mathfrak e_8 and both gradings are symmetries, then, with Hu∈5H_u\in5 and Hd∈5‾⊂10H_d\in\bar5\subset10, the couplings QucHuQu^cH_u lie inside the C3C_3 sector, and QdcHdQd^cH_d, LecHdLe^cH_d and LνcHuL\nu^cH_u take one field from each sector.

In exact family SU(3)SU(3) the family tensor is ϵijk\epsilon_{ijk}, which isolates no top mass; that the top mass comes from Λ3×Λ3→Λ6\Lambda^3\times\Lambda^3\to\Lambda^6 is a proposal.

Proposition 6. (1) No automorphism of 𝔢8\mathfrak e_8 preserving the family grading maps 𝔤1,1\mathfrak g_{1,1} (dimension 45) onto 𝔤1,2\mathfrak g_{1,2} (dimension 18). (2) The Chevalley involution −1∈W(E8)-1\in W(E_8) maps 𝔤a,b\mathfrak g_{a,b} to 𝔤−a,−b\mathfrak g_{-a,-b} and each placed state to its conjugate, so it preserves F1F_1 and F2F_2. (3) In the aligned three-family embedding, no complex automorphism ϕ\phi with ϕ(sf)=sf±1\phi(s_f)=s_f^{\pm1} maps TT onto NN.

Proof of (3). By Schur’s lemma ϕ\phi maps 𝔤1=3f⊗27\mathfrak g_1=3_f\otimes27 onto 𝔤1\mathfrak g_1 or 𝔤2\mathfrak g_2 as a tensor product A⊗BA\otimes B; the grade-one part of TT lies on one family line, and that of NN spans 3f3_f. ◻

The involution is complex-linear, so an antiunitary JJ needs a further conjugation, and its reading as the M2/M5 exchange is a proposal. The result points to automorphisms that neither preserve nor invert the family grading, such as the colour-family exchanges tested in Section 4.

4 Root configurations

In E8⊃SO(16)⊃SO(10)×SO(6)E_8\supset SO(16)\supset SO(10)\times SO(6) the 128 half-integer roots form (16,4)+(16¯,4‾)(16,4)+(\overline{16},\bar4), four families with νc\nu^c and conjugates. Write twice a root as (χ|w|φ)(\chi|w|\varphi), the signs of the colour, weak and family coordinates; family 0 is o=(+++)o=(+{+}+), families 1 to 3 and the quark colours cc have two and one minus signs, and the lepton is −o-o. Then uL,dL(c|−+|f)(c|+−|f)uc,dc(−c|++|f)(−c|−−|f)νL,eL(−o|−+|f)(−o|+−|f)νc,ec(o|++|f)(o|−−|f)\begin{array}{lll} u_L,\ d_L&(c|{-}{+}|f)&(c|{+}{-}|f)\\ u^c,\ d^c&(-c|{+}{+}|f)&(-c|{-}{-}|f)\\ \nu_L,\ e_L&(-o|{-}{+}|f)&(-o|{+}{-}|f)\\ \nu^c,\ e^c&(o|{+}{+}|f)&(o|{-}{-}|f) \end{array}(4) for a family ff, antiparticles being the negatives; three slots give HFH_F. Let dS(v)d_S(v) count the roots of SS at inner product +1+1 with vv.

Proposition 7. With one root per state in this aligned embedding, unique up to W(E8)W(E_8), let TT be the up-type quark of one family ftf_t and NN the three neutrinos, with conjugates. Then F1F_1 and F2F_2 have equal numbers of pairs at each inner product (42 at −2-2, 816 at ±1\pm1, 1812 at 00), and no isometry of ℝ8\mathbb R^8 maps F1F_1 onto F2F_2; in particular no element of W(E8)W(E_8) does.

Proof sketch. Two half-integer roots are at +1+1 when their signs agree in six places, and every root of HFH_F has d=22d=22. The four neutrino roots of family ftf_t each have six roots of TT at +1+1, and the other neutrino roots none, so F1F_1 has d=16d=16 on four roots and 2222 on eight. In F2F_2 the up-type roots lose two neighbours and the others three, so d∈{19,20}d\in\{19,20\} (Supplemental Material, part 34). ◻

Proposition 8. Put the top in slot 0, and let the up-type quarks (in a set A∋0A\ni0), the down-type quarks, the charged leptons and the neutrinos each occupy three of the four slots, independently. For none of the 192 configurations SS does an isometry of ℝ8\mathbb R^8 map S⊖TS\ominus T onto S⊖NS\ominus N.

With the degrees as corrected, S⊖NS\ominus N has d∈{13,17,19,20}d\in\{13,17,19,20\}, only 19,2019,20 in the 48 where down-type quarks and charged leptons share slots, while each neutrino root of family ff in S⊖TS\ominus T has d=16+6(𝟏A(f)−𝟏{0}(f))d=16+6\,(\mathbf 1_A(f)-\mathbf 1_{\{0\}}(f)), which is 16 or 22. Exhaustive computation (Python, exact integers) found it, and the referee gave an analytic proof (Supplemental Material, part 34).

Proposition 9. Let PP exchange the colour coordinates with the family coordinates and the two weak coordinates with each other, and let M=−PM=-P. Then MM is an involution in W(E8)W(E_8) preserving the 128 roots and SU(2)LSU(2)_L; it transposes the colours (r,g,b,ℓ)(r,g,b,\ell) with the families (1,2,3,0)(1,2,3,0), maps the up-type and down-type quarks of family 0 onto the neutrinos and charged leptons of families 1, 2, 3, and exchanges 128⊖T(0)128\ominus T(0) with 128⊖N(1,2,3)128\ominus N(1,2,3), of 116 roots each.

Proof. PP is an even permutation and −1∈W(E8)-1\in W(E_8). MM maps (χ|w1w2|φ)(\chi|w_1w_2|\varphi) to (−φ|−w2−w1|−χ)(-\varphi|{-w_2}\,{-w_1}|-\chi), so tL(c)↦νL(−c)t_L(c)\mapsto\nu_L(-c) and tc↦−νc(−c)t^c\mapsto-\nu^c(-c). ◻

Proposition 10. Let H=Hf⊕Hf¯H=H_f\oplus\overline{H_f} with Hf=(ℂL2⊕ℂR2)⊗ℂc4⊗ℂf4H_f=(\mathbb C^2_L\oplus\mathbb C^2_R)\otimes\mathbb C^4_c\otimes\mathbb C^4_f and the signs of KO-dimension six (Connes 2006). For a unitary ι:ℂc4→ℂf4\iota:\mathbb C^4_c\to\mathbb C^4_f sending the lepton line to e0e_0, let FF be the flip x⊗y↦ι−1y⊗ιxx\otimes y\mapsto\iota^{-1}y\otimes\iota x on ℂc4⊗ℂf4\mathbb C^4_c\otimes\mathbb C^4_f, extended to Hf¯\overline{H_f} by JFJ−1JFJ^{-1}. Then FF is a unitary involution commuting with γ\gamma and JJ, and it conjugates the top Dirac block Ttop=Y⊗Pq⊗P0T_{\mathrm{top}}=Y\otimes P_q\otimes P_0 into the neutrino block Tν=Y⊗Pℓ⊗(1−P0)T_\nu=Y\otimes P_\ell\otimes(1-P_0), with PqP_q, PℓP_\ell, P0P_0 the quark, lepton and family-0 projectors; for DD commuting with FF, the heavy limits of D+sTtopD+sT_{\mathrm{top}} and D+sTνD+sT_\nu have conjugate light spaces of 116 states.

The Pati-Salam and Standard Model algebras act on ℂc4\mathbb C^4_c alone and are not FF-invariant. FF equals MM on left-handed states and MM followed by the particle-antiparticle exchange on right-handed ones, where MM reverses γ\gamma on 64 states; FF lies outside W(E8)W(E_8).

Proposition 11. With four families, let STS_T and SNS_N be the fourth family together with TT and with NN, 44 roots each. No isometry of ℝ8\mathbb R^8 maps STS_T onto SNS_N: up to family permutations their degree multisets are {1016,1212,1316}\{10^{16},12^{12},13^{16}\} and {1024,1316,164}\{10^{24},13^{16},16^4\} (Python, exact integers).

5 The four-family count and the two placements

Under Spin(9)⊂SO(16)\mathrm{Spin}(9)\subset SO(16) embedded through its spinor, the 128 is 44+8444+84 for one chirality of the embedding, the graviton and the three-form (recalled in Supplemental Material, part 34). With four families, 128−84=44=32+12,128-84=44=32+12,(5) so removing F1F_1 leaves the fourth family and TT, and removing F2F_2 leaves it and NN, completing (1). MM carries neither set of 44 onto the other, and Proposition 11 excludes every isometry.

Proposition 12. The colour SU(3)SU(3) of (4) lies in no Spin(9)⊂SO(16)\mathrm{Spin}(9)\subset SO(16) with 128→44+84128\to44+84. So the split 44+8444+84 is not colour-covariant, and the fit 44=32+1244=32+12 is numerical.

Proof. Under such a Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9) the vector 16 of SO(16)SO(16) is the spinor, which restricts to an SU(3)⊂Spin(9)SU(3)\subset\mathrm{Spin}(9) as 16(1)16(1), 2(3+3‾)+4(1)2(3+\bar3)+4(1) or 8+88+8, by the three real nine-dimensional representations of Proposition 2(b). Under colour the vector 16 is 3+3‾+10(1)3+\bar3+10(1). The stabilizer of the split in 𝔰𝔬(16)=𝔰𝔬(9)+84\mathfrak{so}(16)=\mathfrak{so}(9)+84 is 𝔰𝔭𝔦𝔫(9)\mathfrak{spin}(9), since the 84 is irreducible and 𝔰𝔬(16)\mathfrak{so}(16) is irreducible on the 128. ◻

Colour likewise lies in no 𝔰𝔬(9)\mathfrak{so}(9) of 𝔢8\mathfrak e_8 with 248=36+44+84+84248=36+44+84+84, that of Section 3 included: colour gives 248=8+78(1)+27(3+3‾)248=8+78(1)+27(3+\bar3), and the 44 contains a 66 or a 2727 under any SU(3)SU(3) in such an 𝔰𝔬(9)\mathfrak{so}(9). The scope is the regular colour SU(3)SU(3) in this class.

The top thus has two placements, in the C3C_3 sector of the SU(9)SU(9) grading and with the fourth family in the 44 of Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9); the subgroups differ, and no identification of their sectors is claimed. The 𝔰𝔬(9)\mathfrak{so}(9) of Section 3, fixed by the Chevalley involution on 𝔰𝔩(9)\mathfrak{sl}(9), is conjugate in E8E_8 to this Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9), with 𝔨=𝔰𝔬(9)+84\mathfrak k=\mathfrak{so}(9)+84 and 𝔭=44+84\mathfrak p=44+84, the 44 in the gravity sector, and inside E8E_8 both subgroups are SO(9)SO(9) (Supplemental Material, part 34, Proposition 5.6; stated by Claude Sonnet 5.5, proved by Claude Opus 5.5 as referee). For the Chevalley 𝔰𝔬(9)\mathfrak{so}(9) itself the top projects only to the three-form 84 and the νc\nu^c alone to the 44 at t=+12t=+\frac12, against the numerical count 44=32+1244=32+12; the transport between the two frames is open. A recalled analogy (Supplemental Material, part 34) is Gell-Mann’s colour-flavour SU(8)SU(8) of N=8N=8 supergravity, with the spin-12\frac12 fermions in Λ3(8)=56\Lambda^3(8)=56 and 8=3+58=3+5; Proposition 2(c) plays the role of the known failure of that content.

6 What this leaves

Escapes. Proposition 2: nonlinear colour, colour on an internal space, brane states, non-equivariant identifications. Proposition 6: automorphisms that neither preserve nor invert the family grading, other embeddings. Proposition 12: other colour embeddings and non-equivariant identifications. Propositions 7, 8 and 11: maps not linear on the roots, larger groups, and states spread over several roots, which heterotic compactification uses. In E8⊃SO(10)×SU(4)E_8\supset SO(10)\times SU(4) the SU(4)SU(4) is the structure group of a rank-four bundle VV, and the families are zero modes, as the massless fermions of a Kaluza-Klein theory are (Witten 1985), with net number an index, 3 in the heterotic Standard Models on SU(4)SU(4) bundles (recalled in Supplemental Material, part 34). A zero mode is a section of VV, in general involving all four slots, so Propositions 7 and 8 do not apply; for split bundles V=⨁iLiV=\bigoplus_iL_i with ni=−χ(Li)≥0n_i=-\chi(L_i)\ge0 and ∑ni=3\sum n_i=3, the degree multisets still differ in all 40 cases checked.

Open items. (i) How the 96 states of the three-family frame sit against the conjugated Spin(9)\mathrm{Spin}(9). (ii) A four-family finite spectral triple, or Hořava-Witten configuration, with MM or FF as a symmetry and an FF-invariant algebra, from which the statements of Supplemental Material, part 21 follow as the fourth family decouples; whether the mechanism of the top can make it heavy is open. (iii) A nonsplit bundle with index 3, its zero modes, and the action of MM on them.

We propose no mechanism for three. The obstructions say where an exchange of the top with the neutrinos can live: with four slots, and with three as a count of zero modes or of light families.
